Whats Is Overfishing? & How Is It Harming The Ocean?
OVERFISHING IS A SERIOUS THREAT TO OUR OCEAN
Fishing can be destructive to our marine environment in so many ways. Over the years, we have adopted dangerous fishing techniques that harm the ocean.
Here are 5 facts about overfishing and how can we help stop it:
1. Due to overfishing, essential predators and prey are removed from the food chain. This means that creatures above and below them are also impacted. Sharks are one of the most commonly cited examples suffering from the practice of overfishing.
2. BOTTOM TRAWLING: A famous method of fishing involves pulling a big fishing net through the water to catch a lot of fish. When dragging the large, weighted nets across the water, everything that happens to be in the way gets swept up in the net too; like sea turtles and deep-sea corals.
3. When too many fish are taken out of the ocean, it creates an imbalance that can erode the food web and lead to a loss of other important marine life, including vulnerable species like corals.
4. On the human side of the equation, large-scale fishing operations that significantly deplete the amount of fish available end up harming smaller-scale, community fishing industries.
